New Orleans Saints, Doug Marrone Reunite as HC Dennis Allen Begins Assembling his Coaching Staff

The New Orleans Saints are reuniting with a familiar face in former OL coach and OC Doug Marrone. NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported this hiring on Wednesday morning.

While Marrone’s role with the Saints is currently unconfirmed, it appears that he will be the team’s OL coach after they decided not to retain former OL coach Brendan Nugent.

Marrone fits the familiarity theme that the Saints seem to be adopting this offseason. As an OL coach and OC, Marrone’s stint with the Saints lasted from 2006-2008 under former HC Sean Payton.

Additionally, Marrone brings along head coaching experience at both the collegiate and professional levels. After spending four years as the head coach for Syracuse University, Marrone was hired as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills in 2013, where he spent two seasons. Marrone’s next head coaching job would be with the Jacksonville Jaguars after he was named interim head coach in 2016. During his tenure with the Jaguars, Marrone led the team to their first playoff appearance since 2007, but they ultimately fell to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship.

After his firing from the Jaguars at the conclusion of the 2020 NFL season, Marrone returned to the collegiate level as Alabama HC Nick Saban hired him to be the OL coach for the Crimson Tide.

The Saints offensive line has been a strongpoint of the team in recent years, however, the unit seemed to take a step back last season due to injuries and insufficient play. Marrone’s longtime experience working with offensive lines will hopefully help to develop some of the young players on the team and help return the unit to elite form.

  1. […] The Austrian-native was a former TE who converted to LT in 2020, so he is still very raw at the position. His experience and athleticism as a former TE is evident in his play. However, he has shown some inconsistencies in his play that were highlighted in the 2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl. Despite plenty of hype leading up to the Senior Bowl, Raimann didn’t quite live up to the high expectations. That isn’t to say that Raimann will struggle in the NFL. Raimann could benefit greatly from recently hired Saints OL coach, Doug Marrone. […]
